Research in General

APEL has a strong commitment in the establishment of a liaison with industry in Greece and Europe and in pursuing research and development in high technology. The General Secretariat of Research & Technology (GSRT) has designated and funded APEL to evolve to a service laboratory for industrial support in advance technologies.

APEL places great emphasis in combining advanced research with real system development in the following areas:

1. Real-time distributed systems for industrial (PROFIBUS, FIP, FF, SP50, BITBUS) and home (EHSA, EIBA, LON) networking structures based on emerging technologies and existing / forthcoming international standards.

2. Network management, configuration software and protocol stack software for industrial networks and home networks.

3. Protocol software for interworking, integration, interoperabilty and QoS considerations, concerning a wide range of physical channels (copper cables, radio channels, power lines, broadcast channels).

4. Embedded systems for communications based on advanced microprocessor and DSP cores, FPGAs and embedded modules using hardware/software co-design techniques, reusable functional blocks and advanced tools.

5. Hardware/software solutions for several types of advanced networking structures such as software radio, xDSL units, RF modems, set-top-boxes and special ATM adaptors, etc.

6. Advanced wireless systems and their interworking in fixed and broadcasting networks, including broadband wireless access and distribution systems, radio LANs and point-to-point systems supporting interactive real-time and bandwidth-on-demand services

7. Advanced circuit and system design, test methodologies and support tools, focused on low-power mixed signal and highly integrated RF circuits.
