Wireless Networks

wireless

The market demand for small portable terminals offering a variety of services to users coupled with the rapid advances in electronics technology has created an ever increasing need for wireless systems which can be small, convenient and ensure access of the user to its private communication environment.

On the other hand, users expect to have all these services at home (e-mail, Internet, interactive games, video and other multimedia applications) which need a lot of bandwidth and demand advanced high speed modem design and sophisticated access networks.

Real Time Networking

wireless

APEL has developed strong expertise on fieldbus based control using emerging and forthcoming standards, like the CENELEC EN50170 Std. (PROFIBUS, FIP, P-NET), SP50 Fieldbus, Foundation Fieldbus and LONWorks system. The R&D work covers technologies and tools supporting the design and implementation of data-intensive real-time applications, like data acquisition and control systems. Also, there are implementations of special real-time / critical-time protocols, generic network management architectures and interworking communication structures for different fixed and wireless networks, supporting the end-to-end Quality of Service. These activities are supported by platforms for industrial networks, development systems for microprocessors / microcontrollers, PCB design tools and software tools (OPNET, SDL).

Embedded Systems

wireless

APEL has strong expertise and proven engagement in the design of embedded systems. Currently, this activity involves advanced microprocessor and DSP based system design as well true system-level designs on chip. Design strategies are employed that go from simulation to emulation / acceleration, to hardware / software virtual prototype or co-verification and, then, to system implementation. Furthermore, tools for complex design are employed. This activity relies on powerful EDA tools such as the MENTOR GRAPHICS Board Station, Renoir, Seamless, SYNOPSIS, CADENCE (lay-out) and access to COWARE and OMT (SDL). In addition, there exist platforms for µPs and DSPs and access to real-time kernels such as SUN-Chorus. The deep knowledge of embedded systems? tools and methodologies arise as a natural evolution of the long involvement of APEL in designing embedded systems, ranging from high-speed VLSI and mixed signal circuits up to embedded software / middleware development for various processor units including DSPs.

High Speed Communications

wireless

APEL has a long and strong expertise on this field extending from hardware implementations of special high-level interfaces to software developments of advanced communication services and protocols. These activities concern high-speed fixed network (like ATM, xDSL, ISDN) as well as wireless broadband networks, supporting interactive and bandwidth-on-demand applications. The main aim is to support advanced services with end-to-end Quality of Service, running over a variety of media, like fibre, copper cable, radio and broadcast channels. Furthermore, a lot of effort is given to develop interworking structures and services of core networks with mobile and fixed LANs and interoperability across the INTERNET, wide area, local area and home networks. This work is based on the use of advanced hardware development tools and special software platforms, including Real Time Operating Systems cores (like Chorus) and high-level languages (like JAVA).
