Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's & Solutions

  • When running setup, the Operating System prompts me that some files exist, but are (or aren't) out of date. What should I do?
As known, Microsoft ™ Windows ® Operating Systems use libraries (static or dynamic), named with extensions like *.dll or *.ocx. Some of these libraries are considered as "standard" for these operating systems, so they inherently exist in each of them.

RMCLab Client Software uses some more advanced libraries, that already exist in the Operating System, but in their "standard" version. It is recommended that you must update these libraries, if your Operating System identifies them as "out of dated".

Note, that if you choose to replace your existing libraries, you may be prompted to reboot your system. If you are sure enough that your Operating System already uses these libraries (e.g. you are using the Microsoft ™ Visual Studio ®) you can choose not to replace these libraries.

For more information, you can contact Microsoft Developer Network.

  • Setup finished successfully, but I can't contact with RMCLab Server.

If you finish the RMCLab Client Software setup successfully but still can't contact with RMCLab Server, please check one of the following:

  • Your system is under a Firewall. In this situation you should permit "RmcClient.exe" executable file to access the Internet. Moreover, it is recommended that your permition meets the next rule: IP Address: 150.140.187.54, Port Range: 1698-1721
  • You are using Operating System of Microsoft ™ Windows XP ® Family and you are accessing the Internet via a dial-up connection. In this situation you should either disable the Internet Connection Firewall that the Operating System's of Microsoft ™ Windows XP ® Family enable as a default choice, or write a complex rule for this Firewall.
  • You are using an old version of RMCLab Client Software. In this situation you should obtain the last version of this software, which you can get for free from the Download Page of this site.

  • How can I know that I have successfully logged on to RMCLab Server?

When you trying to lon on the RMCLab Server, there are two ways to identify a successfull attempt:
  • If your attempt is successful, the caption of "RmcClient.exe" form will be "Client xxxx", where the four digit xxxx number corresponds to the port you are using to communicate with the RMCLab Server. This is not only an indication but also reprsents a proff that you have successfully logged on the RMCLab Server. That means also that your login information is correct, so you can change your Username and Password and that you can communicate with the other RMCLab users!
  • If you are authorized from RMCLab Development Team to access RMCLab, the system recognizes your previous participation to RMCLab and prompts you to continue yoyr work, that means it provides you the appropiate information (labs/experiments to do).

  • I can't log on to RMCLab Server. What's wrong?

    Please refer to this question.

  • I can't close any of the application windows. When I try to close one, a message appears. Why should I logout to terminate the application?

If you try to simply terminate one of the forms related to the RMCLab Client Software, you will experience a message prompting you to use "Log-Off". In this situation you should try to terminate your session with the RMCLab Server (and also the RMCLab Client Application) by using the "Logoff" command which is located in Client Form.

This happens in order to give to the RMCLab Server the opportunity to safely close your session and save all your data. By this, the next time you log on the RMCLab Server you will be prompted to continue your work where you left it and also all your preferences will be restored.

Note, that if for some reason your Internet connection is lost and thus you can't use the safe command "Logoff" to terminate your session, you can close the RMCLab Client Software by selecting the Client form and pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Shift". This is a hot key sequence for all forms of RMCLab Client Software. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you don't use this option unless it is desperately necessary.

  • I think my communication with the RMCLab Server is very slow, what's wrong?

If you experience such a situation, it may happens due to excessive network load within the intranet of the University of Patras network. This is common for working hours.

Note, that the amount of network traffic that RMCLab Client and Server exchange is extremely low to be responsible for the slow communication, that you may be experiencing.

  • I forgot my login information. What should I do?

First of all, if you use your RMCLab account to bring out a lab exercise or related, your login information was issued to you as well as to the rest of the members of your lab team. So, try to get it from someone else of your team.

In other case (or if the obvious solution - just described - isn't possible) you can contact with RMCLab Administrator .

  • I try to logout from the RMCLab Server, but a message informs me that "Connection is lost" or "Connection is forcefully rejected". How can I manually terminate the application?

If for some reason your Internet connection is lost and thus you can't use the safe command "Logoff" to terminate your session, you can close the RMCLab Client Software by selecting the Client form and pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Shift". This is a hot key sequence for all forms of RMCLab Client Software. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you don't use this option unless it is desperately necessary.

  • I was using RMCLab Client Software, when suddenly it shutted down by itself. Did I make something wrong?

RMCLab Server can terminate one or more of its users, if he discovers that he has to or if he experiences problems.

  • When I logon, a message appears, claiming that my executable files are out of date. What I have to do?

What happens is that you are using an old version of RMCLab Client Software. In this situation you should obtain the last version of this software, which you can get for free from the Download Page of this site. If you persist using your out-of-dated exetutable files you may be capable of communicating with the RMCLab Server, but at your own risk. That means that RMCLab Server isn't responsible if some of your data get lost!

  • I upload my report, but it seems that nothing happens. What goes wrong?

When your report is successfully uploaded you will be informed with an information message. So be patient.

Also you can certify that nothing goes wrong with your Internet Connection.

Note, that if you try to upload a report of 1MB size and you are using an Internet Connection at the maximum speed of 56kbps, you have to wait for at least:
    [1*(10^6) *8]/[56*(10^3)] = 2,3 min.
(If your connection works continuously at full speed).

Also, you should know that this shouldn't happen if you are running at least Version 1.2 of RMCLab Client Software.

  • How can I communicate with other RMCLab users?

RMCLab Client Software provides you with the ability to communicate with the other users of the RMCLab that are connected ate the same time. To do so you should just select the command "Utilities > Chat" from the Client form.

Note, that you can first be informed of how many and who users are logged on by selecting the command "Utilities > Who" from the Client form.

Also you must know that chat between users of RMCLab is visible to all users of the RMCLab that are logged on at the same time and also to the RMCLab Server, who can participate and even advise you!

  • When uploading my report, what exactly filetypes can I send to RMCLab Server?

All filetypes are supported and permitted. Thus, filetypes that are or could contain document types should be uploaded. For example, MS Word documents (*.doc), documents in Portable Document Format (*.pdf) or archives, such as *.zip, *.rar, *.ace, *.gz, *.tar, *.cab, *.iso that contain documents of above filetype.

  • How can I change the IP address and Port to log on RMCLab Server? These fieldsappear to be disabled. What should I do?

In such a situation you have two possible solutions.
    1. You can simply download and run the appropiate patch (IP-Change-Patch.exe) from our Download Page.
    2. You can navigate your Windows Explorer to your System Directory Path (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\ or C:\WINNT\) and locate Initialization File "RMCClient.ini". You can open and edit this file replacing line:
    .IP=150.140.187.30 with ".IP=150.140.187.54". And that's all...!
